Mario’s involvement in boccia spans over twenty years, ranging from a position as a physical educator involved in the initiation of boccia clubs across the province of Quebec to local, provincial and national-level coaching roles. He is a Master Learning Facilitator with the National Coaching Certification Program. He is also a national level classifier and referee, but his first love has always been coaching. Mario appreciates the complexity and technicality of boccia. Consistency within the game, he suggests, requires extensive time commitment, practice, and trial and error. Outside of coaching, Mario is a life-long sport enthusiast, participating in skiing, ice hockey and tennis.
Paul Gauthier winning gold at the 2007 World Cup in Vancouver, Marco Dispaltro and Josh Vander Vies winning bronze in Pairs at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London and multiple other well deserved podiums by Canadian athletes are certainly highlights, but as head coach, Mario takes the greatest pride in the accomplishments of all Canadian boccia athletes. From memorable wins on home turf to watching the success of athletes who are new to the sport, or boccia veterans on the international stage, every year brings moments that make his work meaningful.
